The Most Beautiful Photo Spots to Visit in Edinburgh

3rd November 2025

These are some of the best Instagram-worthy spots to visit in Edinburgh.

I recently took a trip to what I think is one of the UK’s most beautiful and enchanting cities – Edinburgh – for a three-day press visit as part of my job as a leisure and lifestyle journalist.

One thing Edinburgh is never short of is stunning photo opportunities. From its elegant Georgian streets to its centuries-old castle perched on a dormant volcano, the city is packed with character and charm at every turn.

If you’re planning a trip to Edinburgh and are short on time, here’s a guide to the most Instagram-worthy places to visit – complete with how to find them on an easy walking route starting from Waverley Station.

Chessel’s Court, Royal Mile

Tucked away off the Canongate section of the Royal Mile, this little treasure is easy to miss. Chessel’s Court is a peaceful courtyard framed by Georgian façades. The ivy-covered heart surrounding a blue door has made it one of Edinburgh’s most photogenic hidden gems.

Holyrood Abbey, Palace of Holyroodhouse

Holyrood Abbey

At the foot of the Royal Mile, within the grounds of the Palace of Holyroodhouse, stand the atmospheric ruins of Holyrood Abbey. Founded in the 12th century, its towering Gothic arches and open roof make it one of Edinburgh’s most hauntingly beautiful historic sites.

Victoria Street, Old Town

Victoria Street

Recognisable by its rows of brightly coloured shops curving down from George IV Bridge to the Grassmarket, Victoria Street is one of Edinburgh’s most photographed locations. Its colourful façades, cobblestones, and stacked buildings capture the essence of the Old Town.

Cold Town House, Grassmarket

Housed in a converted church at the base of Edinburgh Castle, Cold Town House combines striking architecture with one of the best rooftop views in the city. The turret, draped in purple flowers during summer, adds to the charm, with dramatic views of the castle rising behind.

The Vennel, Grassmarket

The Vennel

Leading down from Lauriston Place to the Grassmarket, The Vennel offers one of the city’s most iconic castle views. The stone steps, framed by old lampposts and historic tenements, perfectly capture Edinburgh’s moody, timeless character.

Ross Fountain, Princes Street Gardens

Ross Fountain

One of Edinburgh’s most recognisable shots, this ornate 19th-century cast-iron fountain sits beneath the towering backdrop of Edinburgh Castle. It’s a must-visit for anyone exploring the gardens or looking for a classic view of the city.

Dean Village, Water of Leith

Dean Village

A short walk from the West End, Dean Village feels like a whimsical countryside escape in the middle of the city. Once a milling settlement, its stone cottages, quaint bridges, and the tranquil Water of Leith make it one of Edinburgh’s most atmospheric corners. The best view is from the bridge overlooking the red-brick Well Court building.

Circus Lane, Stockbridge

Circus Lane

Hidden behind St Stephen Street in the Stockbridge neighbourhood, Circus Lane is a cobbled mews lined with ivy-covered cottages and overflowing flower boxes. Once considered a working-class area, it’s now one of Edinburgh’s most photographed streets. The view toward St Stephen’s Church tower makes it a favourite among photographers.
