Greetings Readers!
Today it’s time to talk Autumn/Winter fashion. Specifically about incorporating staple pieces into your wardrobe that you can wear again and again. Todays blog is in collaboration with Very.
Very is an online retailer that offers a wide variety of products including women’s fashion from a variety of brands. I love shopping with Very because I always find it really quick, affordable and convenient. They stock some of my favourite brands like TopShop, Dorothy Perkins and Monsoon. So I know I’m always sure to find something new that I like. Todays outfit has been collated from the new Autumn/Winter pieces that Very has on offer.
Now I don’t know about you, but in the past I have always been someone who shops for trend. I impulse buy, I see something and I buy it on a whim. Only to wear it a few times and then leave it hanging in my wardrobe for months on end. But over the years I’ve really become and avid believer in only buying classic, interchangeable pieces.
Whenever I head into a new season I always try and find a few key pieces that I know I can swap and change with different garments I already own to create different outfits.
Having a few key pieces really helps me to buy clothes around them and to really think about how I can wear them throughout the season.
Here are some of my tips for buying staple pieces for Autumn/Winter 2020…

First let’s talk boots! Nothing can beat the feeling of a new pair of boots just out the box. Shoes are always a safe bet when it comes to buying staple pieces.
I decided to opt for a new pair of black, leather ankle boots, mainly because my current ones had seen better days. In my mind you can’t ever go wrong with new boots and its always nice to invest in a new pair every once in a while.
The pair I choose were a pair of black brogue style ankle boots with a chunky heel from Monsoon. These are perfect to wear with jeans or a dress and tights combo. They are incredibly comfortable and the heel gives me a bit of hight whilst still being sturdy and easy to walk on.
Ankle boots in particular are great for their versatility. They can be worn with so many things and really make a great staple for your wardrobe.

2. Go with rich colours and fabrics
One thing that I adore about the colder months is the wonderful, rich colours and fabrics on offer. I adore the jewel tones like greens, purples, burgundies, mustards and burnt oranges. But I also get such pleasure in wearing the heavier fabrics like velvets and suedes.
I invested in a deep green midi skirt, another acquisition from Monsoon. The skirt is in a gorgeously luxurious suedette material which makes the skirt hang really nicely. The deep green colour makes it a great staple for Autumn/Winter which can be worn with so many different colours and fabrics.
I also paired this skirt with a deep plum velvet jacket, again from Monsoon. I really love the look of layering different rich fabrics and colours for the Autumn/Winter months. The deep plum shade of the jacket really stands out against the dark green of the skirt. This jacket is a classic piece that could be worn with jeans for a more casual look. You could also team it with a dress or skirt for something a little more evening appropriate.

3. Ruffles are in (and always are)
One thing that always hits the shops at this time of year is ruffles! Whether we are talking high collared, ruffle neck blouses or ruffled poplin dresses. Ruffles always make such a huge comeback at this time of year and my inner old fashioned soul simply swells with delight!
Underneath the jacket I added a white ruffled blouse from TopShop. This blouse has a very Victoriana aesthetic with a ruffled collar and high neckline. This style of top is always so prevalent at this time of year and for good reason. They really are a staple piece for the colder months when high collared blouses are ideal to keep out the cold. This could be worn underneath a pinafore dress or knitted jumper for an everyday look. For a more formal look team it with a skirt like I am wearing.

4. The right jewellery to accessorise
Lets not forget jewellery! Personally during the Autumn/Winter months I always find myself gravitating towards earrings and rings. Mostly because necklaces and bracelets will probably get hidden beneath scarves and coats.
Finally I accessorised my outfit with some small hoop earrings which feature little suns. These were from Rachel Jackson and I really love the more warmer tones that gold jewellery can bring to an outfit for the colder months. When it comes to accessorising my outfits, gold jewellery is always a must. I love how the gold really compliments the rich jewel tones of this outfit. They are dainty and understated, which is always something I look for when it comes to earrings.
The overall aesthetic of my outfit was certainly a rather Victoriana vibe, something a little more formal. However I know that each one of the pieces in this outfit can be worn to create so many different looks and with many pieces in my wardrobe.
When it comes to shopping for staple pieces. I think it’s really important to know what looks good on you, what colours suit you and what styles you wear the most. Think about what your wardrobe is lacking and go from there.
