Hever Castle Bed & Breakfast: The Dreamy Kent Staycation

14th April 2025

Have you ever dreamed of spending the nights within the grounds of a castle?

Greetings Readers

Now, I don’t know about you, but there’s something irresistibly magical about spending the night on the grounds of a castle—where you get to channel your inner royalty and promenade through centuries-old gardens.

Hever Castle is one of those rare places where that dream becomes a reality, thanks to its luxury five-star bed and breakfast. Famously known as the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, Hever Castle is arguably one of the most breathtaking spots in the Kent countryside.

I recently stayed overnight as part of a review for the publications I write for at Newsquest London—but I also wanted to share a bit of the magic with you here.

The Hever Castle Bed & Breakfast is located within the private Astor Wing, a beautiful addition to the castle built by the Astor family in the early 20th century to accommodate their guests.

Today, it has been transformed into a luxury retreat featuring 28 individually styled rooms and two main suites: the Astor Wing and the Anne Boleyn Wing.

Getting There

Hever Castle is easily accessible from London, taking roughly an hour by train from London Bridge to Hever Station, followed by a short taxi ride. If you’re driving, there’s on-site parking available, and the scenic route through Kent makes the journey part of the charm.

Where I Stayed

I stayed in the Edward VI Suite—a spacious, elegantly designed room featuring a plush bed, a cozy lounge area, a roll-top bath, and the most incredible views of the castle itself. This room sits on the pricier end at £404 per night, but waking up to the morning chorus with uninterrupted views of Hever Castle? Absolutely worth every penny.

The décor beautifully blends modern comforts with historic touches, evoking the Tudor charm of the original wing.

What’s Included?

Your stay includes complimentary access to the castle and its grounds for both days of your visit, giving you plenty of time to explore.

Some of my personal highlights? The stunning Italian Garden, the serene lake (famously featured in The Great), and the castle’s vibrant spring displays. Right now, the grounds are teeming with seasonal colour thanks to a spectacular daffodil display—with around [insert number] daffodils planted across the estate.

Inside the castle, don’t miss Anne Boleyn’s bedroom and the incredible costume collection from the BBC’s Wolf Hall. Your room key also gets you a discount in the gift shop and the cafés and restaurants on-site, which are open until 4 PM. I’d recommend popping into the Mote Restaurant for a light bite or a hot drink.

After-Hours Magic

One of the most special aspects of staying at Hever Castle is the rare opportunity to wander the grounds after closing time, when the day-trippers have gone. At golden hour, with the wildlife settling in for the evening, the castle is bathed in warm light—it’s genuinely enchanting. Head to the viewing point for sunset for one of the best photo ops of the trip.

Dining

A quick heads-up: there’s no full-service restaurant on-site for dinner, but The Henry VIII pub is just a five-minute walk away and makes for a lovely evening out. Back at the B&B, you’ll find a bar serving drinks, which you can enjoy in the cozy music room or the billiards room—both of which overlook the gardens.

Breakfast Fit for Royalty

Our stay concluded with breakfast in the elegant Great Hall, where a generous selection of cooked dishes was offered alongside a well-stocked continental buffet—everything you’d hope for from a five-star stay.

Final Thoughts

Hever Castle has long been one of my favourite places to visit in Kent for its exquisite gardens and rich history. But staying overnight felt like a true bucket-list moment. If you’re looking for a staycation that combines English heritage with a touch of luxury, this is it.
